How can teams reach a consensus when each member 'owns' an opinion which he or she is unwilling to give up?

It's been shown that it is relatively difficult to get too emotionally involved when one is asked to select items for survival on the moon or in a shipwrecked raft.  But here it's different.

The team's task is first to select, as individuals, the seven most wondrous, awe-inspiring 'things' which they think should replace the all-but-disappeared ancient wonders of the world.  That's the easy part.

Next, they must join a 5-8 person group and are given 30 minutes to reach a consensus on the group's choice for the new Seven Wonders.

Obviously, the learning comes from how they decide to decide, and the process of give and take, compromise, logical argument versus emotion, etc, gives every trainer ample scope for discussion and message-building

Training Objectives:

  • To help teams practise group decision-making through consensus-seeking
  • To simulate the difficulties involved in compromising on personal values and opinions in the interests of group performance
  • To give group leaders the opportunity to practise consensus-building with a (relatively) harmless decision
  • To practise facilitation skills

Time:

60 minutes
