SalesMaster® Set Up
Open the board and ensure that the spinner is in place and pointing to the “100" mark.
Place the “Big One” cards face down on the centre of the board. If there are particular scenarios that you want teams to address during the game, ensure that these are at the top of the pile. Arrange the remainder of the question cards face down in front of the GamesMaster and position the money so that it is easily to hand.
Divide the players into equally balanced teams. Balance can be achieved by number, experience or any other criteria that you consider appropriate. Remember, that the success of the game depends on players exchanging experiences and knowledge. You should therefore attempt to ensure that there will be reasonable debate both inside the teams and between the teams once play has started.
There is no upper limit to the number of players on the team but be aware that with fewer than three players per team there will be limited debate. If there are more than five on the team, weaker members may not have as much opportunity to participate.
Decide whether you will be Playing by Colour (inner track) or Position (outer track). Explain the rules to the teams and then, as a first task, ask them to select a team name. Reward the most innovative or witty name with £20.
Prior to commencing play, the teams should be informed that the GamesMaster's decision is final.
Playing by Colour
Each team places its marker on one of the Free Lunch" spaces. The GamesMaster then decides which team is to play first (possibly by inviting each team to throw the dice and selecting the ighest roller).
The first team rolls the dice and moves its marker the indicated number of spaces landing on a coloured space. The Games Master then selects a card from the corresponding colour pack and reads out the question. With more experienced teams, they should be warned that listening is an essential selling skill. They will hear the question only once. At the Games Master’s discretion, a team can purchase a re-reading of the question for £10.
The Games Master then allows one minute for the teams to discuss their answer. The sand timer can be used to measure the amount of time and at the end of the period the Games Master asks for the answer.
Each answer is worth a maximum of £50. It is the GamesMaster's discretion as to how much money is awarded for any given answer. As a guide, a team that gives a comprehensive answer listing all of the points suggested in the Games Master’s notes should receive a full payout. Marking should not be overly harsh or unnecessarily lenient. A weak answer would earn a token reward if anything. It is up to the Games Master to decide on the quality of the answer given. However this should be done with integrity and fairness so that players do not feel that one side is being favoured against another. The sample answers are not intended to be fully comprehensive and are provided for guidance only. Gamesmasters should allow answers that are not listed and may set their own criteria for what constitutes the "correct" answer provided that it is both fair and reasonable. The Games Master may choose to give extra weight to “war stories” or practical examples that illustrate the answer more descriptively.
Teams should be allowed a maximum of one minute (measured on the sand timer) in which to give their answer. The question is then offered to the next team round the board in a clockwise direction. They can earn a bonus of up to 50% of the value of the opening question provided that the answer they give adds to the answer already given. Bonuses are not awarded for saying the same thing again in a different way. Subsequent teams can also contribute supplementary answers but the value of the bonus halves each time and the Games Master may levy a fine for repetition.
GamesMasters can choose not to use the sand timer when asking questions. Instead they can use their own timepiece to time the interval allowed for answering the question. This is to allow debate to extend, as it is during this part of the game that the richest learning is achieved. It is important that the timing mechanism (although not necessarily the actual time allowed) remains consistent throughout the game.
