Do you have to be lucky to be a good salesman?

Most sales managers argue that good salespeople make their own luck.  And making your own luck is a matter of professionalism, skill and hard work.

For a salesman to be really successful he needs a number of skills:

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with a proven sales process such as THE QUEST SOLD.
  • Knowledge of his company, his product, the market in which he is working and an understanding of his competitors offerings.
  • The ability to target his activities effectively and profitably at prospects who are likely to place orders
  • The skill and courage to know when to say and walk away.
  • This talent to ask questions in such a way that it leaves the customer feeling at ease and revealing all of his needs which can then be matched to the product offerings available to the salesman
  • The expertise to present solutions convincingly and in a way that the features of his product or service are aligned with the benefits needed by his prospect.
  • The nerve to ask for an order and then remain silent while the customer considers his decision.
  • the ability to be able to handle objections and still guide the negotiation to a successful conclusion
  • The resilience to face rejection but still carry on

  • The personal charm to allow him to manage and improve the relationship with his customer and obtain repeat sales and defended the account from the attacks of competitors

There is a reason that good salespeople are hard to find. From the list above it is obvious that the mix of skills and personal qualities is rare to the question is: can it be trained?

The truth is that the best training will not help an individual with a bad attitude or a lousy product. By the same token a wonderful product in a receptive market does not need a great salesman. However most products are not bad and most markets are not poor. And so well with the exception of the extremities it is possible to help average salespeople become stronger and stronger salespeople to become great.

At sales 101 we run sales courses designed to introduce salespeople to the principles of selling.
